Sports Massage (Aged 8-16)

Muscle Active Anatomy

Sports Massage treatments for children are individually tailored to them. Children are not invincible, they’re still susceptible to aches, pains and strains much like us as adults.

Children and children athletes experience growing pains, over-training, lack of stretching and rest. In addition, they have the stress of school, exams, anxieties and may suffer insomnia.

As adults, we use massage as a preventative measure alongside our injury treatments. Many children receive their first massage only after experiencing an injury. Regular treatments can aid in the prevention of future injuries along with providing a holistic approach to wellness and development.

A parent/carer/legal guardian over the age of 18 must consent to the treatment and must remain present throughout its duration. This protects both therapist and child, it allows the child to have a voice of ‘power’ in the room who is acting in their best interest and providing comfort.

Much like adult injury treatments, each step of the treatment will be explained. For communicating with children, this will be enhanced. I will spend time building a rapport with your child before we begin any assessments or treatments. Sometimes this is through a general chat, sometimes dance or sometimes a quick game!

Treatments may require massage in areas that are commonly associated with massage but may be uncommon for your child. These include upper chest, back, legs, gluteal region and areas of the hip. These areas may feel sensitive for your child due to the strangeness of being massaged in those areas and any tension they are experiencing. This will all be communicated and agreed prior by both your child and you as a parent/carer/legal guardian.

If your child is suffering any long-term health concerns or conditions, it is always advised to consult with their GP prior to booking a treatment. Treatment may be refused for their safety.

A gentle, soothing experience designed to help kids unwind.

Relaxation massage uses light, flowing strokes that are safe and comfortable for young bodies, promoting relaxation without any deep pressure.

Relaxation massage can reduce stress, improve sleep, and even help with emotional regulation. As they grow, children face pressures from school, sports, and social interactions, a relaxation massage can offer them a safe space to recharge both physically and mentally. It can also help with muscle tension from activities like running, jumping, and playing.

Parents often notice that after a massage, their child is more relaxed, happier, and have increased focused.

Overall, a relaxation massage is not just about physical relaxation, it's about emotional comfort too. It gives children a moment to slow down, breathe deeply, and feel nurtured, which can be a great tool for managing the demands of growing up.

A simple, non-invasive way to support your child’s mental and physical health.

Mini Muscle Maintenance

  • A personalised treatment to target injury, pain and tension. Helping your child return to their daily activities with increased range of motion. A parent/carer/legal guardian over the age of 18 must be present for the entire consultation and treatment duration.

    • A holistic assessment, discussing any medical conditions, previous injuries and lifestyle factors.

    • A functional assessment (excl. relaxation treatments).

    • A Postural assessment (excl. relaxation treatments).

    • Discussion with you and your child regarding my findings and treatment plan.

    • Agreement of a treatment plan, if required, to address your child’s condition.

    • You may be required to discuss with your child’s GP prior to treatment taking place.

For relaxation massage functional and postural assessments do not take place.

Consultation time takes place during the initial session. New clients must book a minimum of 45 minutes. Future sessions involve shorter consultations to assess progress.

Towels are used during treatments, to ensure client dignity. Your child’s modesty is protected at all times. For relaxation massage, your child will undress to their underwear and cover themself with a towel before I return to the room. For full relaxation and better access to the back/shoulders, they may be asked to remove or undo bras/sports bras. Children will be communicated with at all times to ensure they are comfortable.

    • For Sports Massage Treatment it is advisable your child wears clothing they are comfortable in, whilst allowing access to muscles. Please avoid clothing that is too tight and restrictive e.g. jeans.

    • For postural assessments, children can wear shorts and t-shirt/sports bra whilst observations take place. If your child does not feel comfortable with this, we can work together for a solution.

    • For the treatment itself, children can remain in a t-shirt/sports bra and shorts. Dependent on the muscle group that needs accessing, they may be asked to roll-up shorts or remove t-shirt. This will all be communicated and they will be covered with a towel.

    • Children will be asked to remove jewellery prior to treatment, if it is present in the area to be treated. This is to prevent damage from massage oil or the techniques performed.

    • After your child’s treatment, they may experience some muscular discomfort similar to post-workout. This is normal and full aftercare advice will be given. They may feel tired afterwards which is also normal. It is important to stay hydrated and avoid strenuous activity.

    • We will discuss your child’s treatment goals and recommendations, then book any future treatments required.

  • Yes. A parent/carer/legal guardian must remain present at all times during a child’s treatment. A parent/carer/legal guardian is required to sign consent forms and must provide their details.

  • Of course! Children with additional needs are welcome. Research has shown a positive outcome of massage with children who have ADHD, reporting an increase in on-task behaviour, reduction in inattention, hyperactivity and improvement of sleep (Khilnani et al., 2003; Robertz et al., 2024).

I have personally worked with numerous children with Additional Needs when working in the NHS and for Olivia Mercer Sports Massage. I have supported children with ADHD, Autism, Mental Health and others. I pride myself in the rapport I am able to build to engage children with their bodies and health.
